What is a community garden?
A community garden is a single piece of land collectively gardened by a group of people for a number of reasons (Check out the list of benefits below). And just as the name "community garden" says, the garden will belong to and be governed by volunteers in the community of Miramichi. Big Ferry Road Community Garden is sponsored by Sovereign Community Church, located at 302 Big Ferry Rd in Douglastown.

  • Encourages Self-Reliance
  • Beautifies Neighborhoods
  • Produces Nutritious Food
  • Reduces Family Food Budgets

  • Creates opportunity for recreation, exercise, therapy, and education
  • Reduces Crime

How it works:

To participate, there is an annual membership fee of $20 a year to cover the cost of shared tools and other collective resources. Additionally, we ask that each member contributes 5 hours of volunteer labour a year to the care for the garden as a whole. Don't worry if you have little or no gardening experience! You can choose the size of plot that works for you. Also, you can learn how to garden from other members of the garden and from workshops we will offer to help train new gardeners.

We need to know how many people want a garden plot. Please contact us to reserve a plot and we will respond to your submission as soon as we are able.

In early spring, we invited children around the River to learn where our food comes. They planted seeds in soil pots and took them home to later plant the seedlings in the garden in Spring.

In late winter, we hosted a Children's Seed Pot Party so kids could plant seeds in little soil pots, watch them grow at home and bring them back to the garden in spring for planting.
